Rugs Can Make or Break a Room

Nothing ties a room together like the right rug. Find the perfect one and your room can go from drab to fab. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Time it Right
Want to make a statement with your rug?
Start with your rug and then build the room around it.

Already have furniture you love?
Your rug should be a supporting element in the space - choose one that works with your palette.

Remember: Never go rug shopping in the middle of the decorating process.

Embrace Color
Area rugs are a great way to inject playfulness and fun into the room, so embrace color and pattern while shopping for one. The great thing about rugs with a lot of color and design elements is that you are not locked into any one aspect and you can change up the color of the walls several times over the life of the rug.

Don’t get hung up on color matching and getting the exact shade. Stick with similar hues and it will all work out perfectly.

Size Matters
The number one mistake for most people is getting a rug that is too small. Keep in mind that it should be big enough that your main pieces of furniture, such as sofas, either sit on it or are very close to it. Too small, and the uniting effect will be lost.

Place it Properly
Placement also has importance. In the living room, a centered rug creates a great base point for your furnishings. Alternatively, you can use the setup of your seating to determine the placement. In the bedroom, it should be positioned underneath the bed but stop short of bedside tables to give the room some breathing space. In the dining room, the rug should be centered under the table and have enough space for the chairs to still sit on top of the rug when pulled out.
